By Kulraj Sandhu

Walking has always been more than just exercise for me; it's a way to find solace and calm in an otherwise hectic life. During lockdown, my frequent walks exploring new local areas sparked a deeper passion for hiking, leading me to venture further afield. Now an avid hiker, I’ve had the pleasure of discovering many beautiful trails in and around London. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll with music in your ears or a challenging trek immersed in nature's sounds, these top five hiking spots offer something special for every woman who loves nature and adventure.

1. Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is my go-to spot for a quick escape into nature. The vast green space makes you feel miles away from the bustling city.

Highlights:

  • The diverse trails cater to all fitness levels. My favorite route leads up to Parliament Hill, where the view of London’s skyline is always breathtaking.

  • The mix of woodlands, ponds, and open meadows ensures each visit feels unique.

  • Kenwood House is a charming historical gem within the Heath, perfect for a cultural detour.

Tip: Early mornings are the best time to visit, offering a serene and tranquil hiking experience with fewer people around.

2. Richmond Park

Richmond Park is a natural treasure trove that I return to often for a recharge.

Highlights:

  • The park is vast, with the 7.2-mile Tamsin Trail offering a scenic and invigorating loop.

  • Spotting the free-roaming deer is always a magical experience, adding a sense of wild beauty to the park.

  • The Isabella Plantation, with its vibrant flora, is especially stunning in spring.

Tip: Don’t forget your camera—Richmond Park is particularly photogenic during golden hour.

3. Epping Forest

Epping Forest is my go-to when I crave a deeper connection with nature. The ancient woodland exudes a mystical quality.

Highlights:

  • The forest’s extensive trail network allows for a full day of exploration without retracing your steps. The 4.5-mile Oak Trail is ideal for a leisurely hike.

  • The diverse array of trees, ponds, and wildlife makes every hike feel like an adventure. I often discover quiet, beautiful spots that feel like my secret garden.

  • Historical sites, like Iron Age forts, add a fascinating layer of intrigue to the hike.

Tip: Use a GPS or map—the trails can be intricate, and it's easy to get lost.

Box Hill in Surrey offers some of the most rewarding hikes with its stunning countryside views.

  • The Box Hill Circular Walk is challenging but worth every step. The climbs are tough, but the views of the Surrey Hills and South Downs are breathtaking.

  • The area is rich in flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature photography.

  • There are plenty of peaceful spots for a picnic, providing a perfect break during your hike.

Tip: Sturdy hiking boots are a must, as the terrain can be steep and uneven.

5. Leith Hill

Leith Hill is another fantastic spot in Surrey, offering a rewarding challenge and some of the best views in Southeast England.

Highlights:

  • The Leith Hill Circular Walk offers a varied experience with woodland trails and open heathland.

  • Climbing the Leith Hill Tower for panoramic views is a highlight. On a clear day, you can see as far as London and the English Channel.

Tip: After your hike, visit the nearby village of Dorking for a charming post-hike experience with great food and refreshments.

Additional Tips for London Hikes:

  • London Loop Walks: A series of walks around London, divided into sections that you can start anywhere. These walks helped me explore hidden gems in the local area during lockdown, revealing history, beautiful scenery, and a chance to meet lovely people along the way.

  • Eastbourne / Seven Sisters: Another great trek, especially heavy on the calves but with gorgeous coastal scenery. On a summer day, it feels like you’ve left England.

Hiking in and around London is a fantastic way to stay active and connected to nature. Each of these spots offers a unique experience, from serene park walks to challenging countryside treks. Remember to wear comfortable hiking shoes, pack a rain jacket and a cap, bring plenty of water, and immerse yourself in the beauty these trails have to offer. Happy hiking!
