London’s Best-Kept Secrets for the August Bank Holiday Weekend

Looking for something to do during the late summer August Bank Holiday? There are endless choices in our country’s capital and these are some of my favourites in London.

1. Street Art Walking Tour of Shoreditch

Did you know that the most talented street artists from around the world come to Shoreditch to showcase their art? Street art here isn't just graffiti; it's often challenging, political, and grassroots art.

I take this walking tour every year and I love it. It is an absolute must for anyone with a keen interest in street art or someone who wants to learn the history of Shoreditch and how it has transformed from one of the poorest parts of London to the home of hip bars and restaurants that we now see.

Cost- Free. Tips recommended.

2. Wimbledon’s Hidden Gem- Cannizaro Park

Wimbledon is famous for tennis and strawberries & cream, but did you know there's a hidden gem in the southwest corner of Wimbledon Common? This Grade II listed park, once a private 18th-century estate, features ornamental gardens, a herb garden, an aviary, and a rare tree collection.

Cost- Free

Opening Hours- 9am to Dusk- Friends of Cannizaro Park

3. Explore the scenes behind one of London’s icon landmarks – Behind the scenes walking tour of The Tube

The Tube, constructed in the 19th century, has many disused stations, secret wartime shelters, and hidden corridors.

The London Transport Museum runs hidden walking tours that take you behind the scenes of one of the biggest transport networks in the world. You can explore Churchill’s secret station to the hidden platforms of the Holborn station. Discover the origins of the world’s first underground network at Baker Street and how passengers travelled 160 years ago.

Cost- From £45 per person

4. Part Circus, Part Rave – the ultimate dance Argentinean speculator – Fuerza Bruta @ Camden’s Roundhouse

I first saw Fuerza Bruta in 2006 at the Roundhouse and it blew me away! It is like being immersed in an almost interactive circus act to thumping dance music. Aerial performers, stunning dancers and water acrobats entertain for a whopping 70 minutes and will leave you in awe.

I saw their newest European show AVEN a few weeks ago and it was mind blowing. Watch out for the giant whale and waterworks!

Cost- From £35pp

5. Neon Heaven- God’s Own Junkyard

If you love Neon lights, you will love God’s Own Junkyard! Hidden away in a warehouse in Walthamstow, this 70 years old family business boasts the largest collection of neon signs and sculptures outside of the US.

The late founder, Christopher Bracey also known as the Neon Man was a neon sign maker who not only collected many iconic pieces over the years but made pieces for some legendary films such as Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” and Angelina Jolie’s “Tomb Raider”.

This place is great for a quirky date. After browsing the gallery, you can grab a drink at their bar and coffee shop.

Cost- Free.

Booking Required- No. God's Own Junkyard Art Gallery

6. Towpath Café- De Beauvoir Regent's Canal

You know summer is here when the famous Towpath Café reopens on this coolest stretch of East London’s De Beauvoir Regent’s Canal. Grab breakfast or lunch while basking in the remaining summer sunshine. Look out for early morning runners & cyclists while admiring the houseboats cruising up and down the canals.

Booking Required- No (but it does get busy) Towpath Cafe
