7 Things to consider before getting a pet

I’m a proud pet parent of my 2 rescue dogs Bailey & Taylor. They are my family and it’s definitely been an adventure of highs and lows going through life with them. I understand that stepping into pet parenthood can be a little bit daunting so I want to share 7 of my top considerations with you to ensure you're fully ready for the commitment and joy of being a pet parent.

1.     Evaluate Your Lifestyle

Your daily routine, work hours, and social commitments play a significant role in determining the right pet for you. Things can be significantly different if you are a homebody or a social butterfly.  High-energy dogs, for example, may not be the best fit if you're often away or have a hectic lifestyle. I can’t emphasise enough how crucial it is to choose a pet whose needs align with your lifestyle.

2.     Your home environment

London's living spaces vary widely, from spacious homes to compact flats. Assess whether your current home can accommodate the pet you have in mind, especially considering breeds that require more room to roam or access to outdoor spaces. Flats may be more suitable for smaller pets or cats, while larger breeds of dogs thrive in homes with more space or gardens.

3.     Understand Financial Commitments

This is an important one.  The cost of pet ownership extends beyond the initial adoption or purchase price. From routine vet visits and vaccinations to unexpected medical emergencies, the costs can add up.  I like to make sure that I set aside a budget for my dogs and I always have emergency funds for them saved.

4.     Time Investment

Pets require your time and attention, from daily walks and feeding to playtime and cuddles. The commitment doesn't end at the weekend; it's a continuous part of your routine, ensuring your pet feels loved and secure. There’s nothing better than cuddling up and watching Netflix for me. Dogs need more social interactions whilst cats are more independent. The interaction with your helps keeps them healthier and happier.

5.     Plan for Your Absence

Consider your options for when you're not around. Pet boarding, sitting services, or dog walkers are essential services but come at an additional cost. Planning for these expenses is vital, especially for those who travel frequently or work long hours. If you’re lucky enough to have family or friends to take care of your pets this will definitely help.

6.     Long-term Commitment

Pets are not just for lockdown or a season; they're for life. Many pets live for several years, requiring a long-term commitment to their care and wellbeing. Reflect on your future plans and whether a pet fits into that picture for the long haul.

7.     The Joy and Responsibility

While pets bring unparalleled joy, companionship, and laughter into our lives, they also come with significant responsibilities. It's essential to weigh the joyous moments against the practical considerations to ensure you're ready for both the highs and the lows of pet ownership.

Embracing pet ownership is a journey filled with love and challenges. By carefully considering these seven aspects, you're taking a responsible step towards ensuring a happy, fulfilling life for both you and your future pet, avoiding the heartache of a pet that doesn't fit your lifestyle or circumstances. The joy of pet ownership is profound, but it's a joy best experienced when fully prepared for the commitment it entails.

If you are looking to add to your family, please consider adopting from shelters or rescue organizations.  This way you give a loving home to a pet in need and often these centers help you decide with pet is the best fit for you and your life.
